Green Building

Green building is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and deconstruction. Examples include energy efficiency, electrification, water efficiency, waste minimization and diversion, and use of green building materials like sustainable timber, materials with recycled content, and other circular materials

Green Building Resources

Many entities are involved with and promote green building in various ways. From green building certification bodies to government and non-profit organizations, here are some tips and tricks when considering green building practices for your home:

Salvage and Deconstruction

Before a construction project, consider what can be salvaged. The San Mateo County Sustainability Department has information on waste reduction in construction and demolition. Per the demolition guide: “Most cities in San Mateo County have a recycling ordinance or building regulations that requires contractors to recycle most waste generated on the job. Some cities may limit building contractors to a few approved recycling facilities and debris box companies.” The Town has a Construction and Demolition (C&D) Debris Program

Water Efficiency and Landscaping

Landscaping and water efficiency are crucial components of green building. Using native and drought tolerant plants that require less water, minimizing turf, and installing low-flow water fixtures and appliances, such as faucet aerators, showerheads, and washing machines are all easy ways to reduce water use in your home. More information on water efficiency landscaping can be found on CalRecycle's website, as well as a Water Efficient Plant and Landscape Guide. Also visit the Town of Woodside Water Saving Tips page.
