Town Manager's Note2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the Woodside Fire Protection District. The District was the first local government organized for the area, predating the incorporation of the Town of Woodside by 31 years and the Town of Portola Valley by 39 years. It is therefore fitting that on March 22nd the Fire Protection District will be holding a grand re-opening of Station 7 on Woodside Road in combination with a commemoration of their 100 years of service to the community. In addition to the celebration at Station 7, there are a lot of other great events and activities on the calendar for the upcoming month. In addition to the popular First Friday events sponsored by the Town’s Arts & Culture Committee on March 7th (this month it is A Woodside Treasure: The Djerassi Resident Artists Program through the Art of Robert Buelteman), the Town’s Environment and Open Space Committee is sponsoring a Spotlight on Owls and Bluebirds event on March 2nd, and the Town’s Climate & Sustainability Committee is hosting a home electrification event on March 30th. These are all put on through the hard work and dedication of your neighbors, so I encourage you to come out and support their efforts while becoming more knowledgeable and enriched. For seniors there are two events in March. On March 20th, the Sheriff’s Office will hold a workshop on crime prevention and on March 26th there will be a session at the Woodside Library on preventing falls. These are part of a new initiative providing programing to benefit seniors in our community. As winter turns to spring, I hope you can get out and enjoy these activities with your neighbors. All in their own way, they speak to what makes Woodside special. ~Kevin Bryant, Town Manager

Press Release from WFPD: Providing Information on Hydrants in its DistrictPost Date: 02/06/2025 1:30 PMThe Purpose of Hydrants in California and their Common Misconceptions about their Role in Firefighting Efforts, Particularly During Wildland Fires. Hydrants in California were developed primarily as a resource for municipal and structural firefighting operations within urban, suburban, and developed areas. These systems were engineered to provide a reliable, pressurized water supply to assist fire departments in managing emergencies, such as structural fires, vehicle fires, and other localized incidents. However, hydrants are not designed, nor are they intended, to serve as a primary tool for extinguishing wildland fires. The unique nature of wildland fires—characterized by rapidly changing conditions, expansive coverage, and difficult terrain—necessitates specialized equipment and tactics. Air support, water tenders, portable pumps, and other resources are typically employed in these scenarios to mitigate the spread of such fires and to protect lives and property. In areas where hydrants exist near wildland-urban interfaces, they can play a supporting role in containment efforts, such as creating defensible space, protecting structures, and refilling fire apparatus. Yet, the design and capacity of hydrant systems are not suitable for the extensive water supply demands that wildland firefighting often requires. It is essential to understand this distinction to set appropriate expectations for the use of hydrants and to recognize the broader strategy required to combat wildland fires effectively. The development and deployment of hydrants remain a vital part of urban fire defense, ensuring the safety of residents and their communities. Click here to read the press release in its entirety.

Recent Cases of Bird Flu Highlight Need to Prevent Spread
The recent discoveries of bird flu in a backyard flock and in a stray cat in San Mateo County highlight the importance of preventing the spread of H5N1. The County’s Department of Agriculture/Weights and Measures is advising backyard poultry owners to watch for signs of bird flu in their flock and to take appropriate measures such as washing hands before and after handling birds and disinfecting footwear to reduce the risk of spreading bird flu. - County Health says residents whose pets show signs of illness should contact their veterinarian.
- There are no human cases of H5N1 related to these detections, but bird flu is usually fatal to cats and poultry.
