Town Manager's Note

It’s mid-August and schools are opening for the 2024-25 academic year. Within the Town, the students’ first day back at Woodside Elementary School will be Wednesday, August 21st.  The Harper School, adjacent to Town off Harcross Road, will open its academic year on Tuesday, September 3rd. While we expect drivers to be mindful of the pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrians that share Woodside’s roads year-round, the beginning of the school year is a good time to rededicate ourselves to safe driving habits. The newsletter has a link to back-to-school safety tips.

You may have heard about SB 1383 – California’s Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Reduction Strategy.  This law requires all Californians to divert organic materials from landfills to combat the impact of methane gas emissions. The good news for Woodside is that our solid waste provider, GreenWaste, is well positioned to help the Town, its residents and businesses meet the law’s objectives. As described in this newsletter, you can help by properly using your GreenWaste carts.

We are moving into the peak of fire season, and the Woodside Fire Protection District has contributed resources to this newsletter for you to use to minimize risk at your property and comply with the District’s new Fuel Mitigation Ordinance.

The best communities are those where the actions of individuals add up to something greater than the sum of its parts. By being safe on the roads and caring for your home and property, you help Woodside be the best of communities.

~Kevin Bryant, Town Manager

November 5, 2024 General Municipal Election

At the close of the extended nomination period on August 14th, there was only one candidate nominated for each of the three Council Districts up for election in November.  Pursuant to the California Elections Code, the Town Council will hold a special meeting at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 22nd at Independence Hall to decide whether to (1) appoint the candidates who have been nominated for the three seats, or (2) hold the election on November 5th.

SB 1383 and Proper Sorting:

Only Clean Yard Trimmings in the Green Cart

California Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383) requires all Californians to divert organic materials from the landfill. The Town has collaborated with GreenWaste to ensure its sorting program is in compliance with SB 1383, but we need your help to ensure organic materials are placed in the proper cart.

If you have a green cart, please only place yard trimmings in that cart. Food scraps and other organic material belong in your mixed compostables gray cart. These organic materials are extracted at the GreenWaste San Jose Material Recovery Facility, a high diversion organics processing facility, and sent to Z-Best for further processing.

GreenWaste collects and transports your yard trimmings from the green cart directly to their Z-Best Composting Facility in Gilroy, where they are transformed into a nutrient-rich compost used for agriculture and by landscapers.

Learn more about these facilities on GreenWaste's website and find out What Goes Where in each of your bins.

How to Properly Dispose of Household Batteries

Never place used batteries, including devices with embedded batteries, in any of your GreenWaste carts. Batteries are considered Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and can cause fires when not handled properly. Make sure your used AA, AAA, 9-volt, and small lithium-ion batteries have their terminals taped and are placed in a sealed, clear, and tear resistant bag on top of your blue recycling cart on your collection day. Be sure to use clear packaging or electrical tape (no scotch tape) and ensure button batteries are fully taped on both sides.

Report mosquito bites with image of mosquito

Info from San Mateo County Mosquito & Vector Control District

Protect Yourself from Mosquitoes and Report Dead Birds

As hot weather continues and you spend time outside, the San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District encourages you to protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites with these simple steps:

  • Use insect repellent – EPA-registered repellents are safe and effective. EPA-registered repellents typically include one of the following ingredients: DEET, Picaridin, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, IR3535, Permethrin (for pre-treating clothing).
  • Once a week dump items that contain water, such as tires, buckets, plant saucers, toys, kiddie pools, birdbaths, or trash containers. Mosquitoes need water to grow from egg to adult – removing water means reducing mosquito populations.
  • Check and repair broken screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of your house.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, especially in the early morning, evening, and night when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Report dead birds. Dead birds can be a sign of West Nile virus in the area. District staff will collect and test certain kinds of dead birds. You can report dead birds to the hotline at 1-877-WNV-BIRD or online.
  • If you notice mosquitoes biting around your house, call the District or submit an online service request for a technician to investigate the problem and stop the mosquitoes. This is a no-cost service paid for by taxes. Click here to learn more about protecting yourself from mosquito bites.

Tips and Reminders from Livestock & Equine Heritage Committee

Heat Domes and Horses

As temperatures rise and extreme heat events become more frequent in San Mateo County, it's crucial for horse owners to understand how heat affects their animals. Heat tolerance varies by breed, fitness, and health, with lighter breeds like Arabians being more resilient, while heavier breeds, obese horses, and those with conditions like Cushing's are more vulnerable. Signs of heat stress include increased heart and respiratory rates, excessive or absent sweating, and lethargy.

To protect your horse, ensure proper hydration, provide shade, avoid intense exercise during peak heat, and monitor for signs of overheating. If heat stress occurs, immediately cool the horse with water, move them to a shaded area, and monitor their vital signs, contacting a veterinarian if necessary. Adjusting riding schedules and improving barn ventilation can also help prevent heat-related issues. Read the full article on the Town's website.
